Japan Festival Houston 2023 attendees got a ringside introduction to Japan’s national sport – sumo (相撲).
The first-ever Kuraray Sumo Dohyo featured Houston’s very own sumo stable -- Shōgeki Sumo.
The rikishi of Shogeki Sumo highlighted how sumo wrestlers defeat opponents who may be larger or stronger using the many Kimari Te (決まり手) or winning techniques of the ancient sport.
Viewers had the opportunity to get in on the fun – becoming a Yokozuna (grand champion) for a day by donning the mawashi loincloth and trying their hand at pushing opponents out of the ring or maneuvering opponents to the ground.
500 viewers were also lucky recipients of Kuraray yokozuna figurines. (Yes, the figurines are made from a material developed and produced by Kuraray!)
