HOUSTON, Texas — On Sunday, June 28, the Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH) proudly partnered with FIFA Fan Festival™ Houston to present “Raise the Blue, Feel the Samurai Spirit,” a special Japan Cultural Feature celebrating Japanese culture and welcoming Samurai Blue ahead of Japan’s FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match against Brazil.

Presented on the FIFA Fan Festival Houston Main Stage, the 50-minute cultural showcase introduced thousands of soccer fans from around the world to the energy, excitement, and traditions surrounding Japan’s national team.

The program opened with a dynamic performance by Kaminari Taiko, Houston’s premier Japanese taiko drumming ensemble, whose powerful rhythms captivated the audience and set the tone for an unforgettable celebration.

The audience was then welcomed by Patsy Brown, President & CEO of the Japan-America Society of Houston, followed by remarks from Consul General Takeshi Koyama, who thanked supporters and celebrated the friendship between Japan and the United States through the universal language of sport.

One of the afternoon’s highlights was the appearance of beloved Japanese superfan group Chonmage-tai, featuring Captain Tsun-san, Janken Man, and Riki. Known throughout Japan for their enthusiastic support of Samurai Blue and their commitment to encouraging disaster relief through soccer, the trio brought Houston’s Fan Festival crowd to its feet as they taught the official chants and cheers of Japan’s national team.

Fans enthusiastically joined in, waving flags, wearing blue origami samurai helmets, chanting “Nippon!” and experiencing firsthand the passion and unity that are hallmarks of Japan’s supporter culture.

From taiko drumming and omotenashi to supporter culture and community spirit, the program highlighted the many ways sport and culture bring people together across borders.

JASH extends its sincere appreciation to the FIFA Houston Host Committee, FIFA Fan Festival™ Houston, the Consulate-General of Japan in Houston, Kaminari Taiko, Captain Tsun-san, Janken Man, Riki, and everyone who helped make this celebration possible.
