HOUSTON, Texas - The Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH) proudly welcomed the inaugural Chiba Innovators Academy to Houston during the first week of August, bringing together ten high school students from Chiba City for an immersive entrepreneurship and leadership program designed to inspire the next generation of innovators.
The weeklong program gave students the opportunity to explore entrepreneurship, leadership, and innovation while gaining firsthand experience in Houston’s dynamic business communities. Through workshops and mentorship, the students developed the skills and confidence needed to turn ideas into meaningful solutions.
The Chiba Innovators Academy was the direct result of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed last October between JASH and Chiba City Mayor Shunsuke Kamiya, which expanded opportunities for educational, cultural, and innovation exchanges between Houston and Chiba City. The academy represented an important step in strengthening the growing relationship between the two cities and creating new opportunities for young people to learn from one another.
The students began their Houston experience with a visit to Houston City Hall, where they learned about the city’s international partnerships, economic development efforts, and role as one of the most diverse and globally connected cities in the United States. The visit provided students with an introduction to Houston’s international outlook and highlighted the strong relationship between Houston and Chiba City.
Following their visit to City Hall, the students began the core of their program at the University of Houston’s C. T. Bauer College of Business, where they participated in an immersive entrepreneurship experience through the Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship (WCE), nationally recognized for its undergraduate entrepreneurship program.
Working alongside faculty, mentors, and University of Houston student leaders, the students learned the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, from developing business models to testing ideas and refining them into compelling business pitches. Through collaborative activities and mentoring from current WCE students, the students developed innovative business concepts and prepared to present their final pitches at the conclusion of the academy.
JASH extended its sincere appreciation to the City of Houston, the University of Houston, the C. T. Bauer College of Business, and the Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship, as well as the faculty, mentors, volunteers, and partners who helped make the inaugural Chiba Innovators Academy possible.
Through initiatives such as the Chiba Innovators Academy, JASH continued to strengthen the enduring friendship between Houston and Chiba City while creating opportunities for young people to connect, learn, and build a more globally minded future together.
