HOUSTON, Texas — The Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH) was proud to support Yokohama F. Marinos Futuro as the team represented Japan at the 2026 Genuine Cup, held July 27 through August 1 at Rice University.
Hosted by the Genuine Foundation, the international tournament brought more than 1,000 athletes from 54 countries to Houston for a celebration of inclusion, opportunity, and the unifying power of sport. Created for athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and autism, the Genuine Cup places respect, fair play, teamwork, and friendship at the heart of the competition.
From their first match to their final moments on the field, the Marinos players represented Japan with determination, resilience, and unmistakable team spirit. There were victories to celebrate, difficult matches that tested the team, and moments of disappointment along the way. Through it all, the players continued to encourage one another, compete with respect, and embrace every experience the tournament offered.
Their perseverance was rewarded with a third-place finish, but one of the most meaningful honors came at the closing ceremony, when Yokohama F. Marinos Futuro was selected to receive one of only five Genuine Awards presented during the tournament. The award recognized the respect, inclusion, fair play, and team spirit the players demonstrated throughout the week—a fitting reflection of how they represented both Marinos and Japan.
Yet some of the most memorable moments of the week happened beyond the scoreboard.
Throughout their stay, the players and coaches experienced Houston, connected with members of the local Japanese and American communities, shared Japanese culture with fellow participants, and formed friendships with teams from around the world. Whether cheering from the sidelines, gathering around a meal, exchanging words of encouragement after a hard-fought match, or celebrating together at the closing ceremony, each encounter reinforced the idea at the heart of the Genuine Cup: sport has an extraordinary ability to bring people together.
For JASH, welcoming Yokohama F. Marinos Futuro to Houston was especially meaningful. The week offered a chance not only to cheer for Team Japan, but also to create the kind of personal connections that give the U.S.-Japan relationship its lasting strength. What began with soccer became something much greater—a week of friendship, cultural exchange, mutual encouragement, and memories shared between Yokohama and Houston.
The final whistle may have sounded, but the friendships remain.
